Traditional Marketing vs Digital Marketing
Before starting to learn digital marketing, should I know traditional marketing?

There is always a confusion in the early stage of career in choosing between Digital Marketing and Traditional Marketing. Traditional Marketing is a way of approach to understand the customers and given them a product or service in a profitable way to satisfy their needs or wants. Digital Marketing is performing the above said tasks in a digital platform, that is online.

But that does not mean it’s not required.

Traditional Marketing vs Digital Marketing and differences

Knowing the marketing basics always help. Marketing does not mean selling. Selling is one part under the Marketing Umbrella.

Digital marketing is not a formula. Digital marketing is not about selling. Let’s take an example.

Let’s consider Google Ads. Google Ads is a platform where you can showcase your ad on SERP (Search engine results page). When you search for any product on Google, Google shows ads(Max 4 ads in top and 3 ads in bottom). Look at the marked “ad” portion in the below pic to know which ones are ads.

Traditional Marketing and Digital Marketing examples

For a person to design an ad, knowing just Google ads is not enough. Whenever we design an ad in google ads, we need to provide location, age, gender to minimize the target market.

Why?

That’s how you ensure that your ad reaches only the actual customers. Google charges money per click (Pay per click). So if a person who is not interested or cannot purchase your product clicks on your ad, it would burn your money (Huge margins of Google profits come from Google Ads).

If you do not perform your marketing skills to analyze your target market, you would end up with a huge customer base that contains people who will not buy your product.

Need an example?

Lets see that you run a online digital marketing course and while designing a Google Ad, you mentioned age as ALL. Now if your ad shows up to a child of age 5–10 years or if it appears to people of age >50, will they be taking your course?

This is one simple example to understand why basic marketing skills are much needed to implement any digital marketing technique. Hope this blog has helped in identifying the use of learning Traditional Marketing before jumping into Digital Marketing in full scale.
